Julian, this is a painting of the ocean. I painted you standing on the beach. In Nonna’s painting, you will see waves of water. Wind creates waves when it blows across the surface of the water.
The ocean is very big so the land that is all around the ocean is big, too. Different parts of the land are called different names. The land that you live in is called the country of Germany and the land on the other side of the ocean where Nonna and Nonno live is the country called the United States. The lands and the oceans together cover the whole wide world.
So you see, Nonna and Nonno are far, far away. Our home, the U.S., is very far from Germany, where you live. I want you to understand all that because it’s why we can’t be with you all of the time to hug you and hug you and give you lots of kisses!
It’s fun to understand things about the earth, like the oceans and the countries all around this great big world. Knowing about the oceans is especially fun because oceans are so very big and very deep. Many beautiful animals and plants live in the ocean, some near the surface and some way down deep.
Remember, like Mama says and like Nonna will show you in the artwork you'll see next, much of the time when it’s daytime in Germany (where you live), it is nighttime in the U.S. (where Nonna and Nonno live).
